Abstract
The effect of some dietary fibers on the colonic pH, ¥â-glucuronidase and ¥â-glucosidase activities of intestinal bacteria and total bilirubin and total cholesterol in the bile were investigated. When the intestinal bacteria were cultured in the medium containing apple pectin and citrus pectin (0.5 w/v%), the activities of ¥â-glucuronidase were inhibited by 51 % and 14%, respectively. Futhermore, the fecal pH and the activities of ¥â-glucosidase and ¥â-glucuronidase of rats treated with apple pectin or citrus pectin were lower than those of the control. Total bilirubin and conjugated bilirubin, excreted in the bile, were 2- and 3-fold higher in the control than in citrus pectin group or apple pectin group. However, the cholesterol excreted into the bile was not significantly different in each group. Therefore, it was suggested that citrus and apple pectins could prevent colorectal tumors by lowering intestinal pH and inhibiting ¥â-glucuronidase of intestinal bacteria.
